<b>N</b>etwork-based <b>I</b>ntrusion <b>P</b>revention <b>S</b>ystems

NIPS are a form of [[IPS]] and usually implement either a [[sniffing|sniffer]] or [[NIDS]] and a border [[gateway]] in conjunction with a [[firewall]] to block attacks before they reach the target host at the network layer.  Many of these are integrated with [[SIM|SIMS]] applications or appliances.
